work/life balance

Hey friends! Happy Monday! Today I am going to talk a bit about the elusive work-life balance. I am a strange blend of stay at home mom/work from home mom. Our six year old is in half day kindergarten and our four year old is in a 2x a week morning preschool. It is a good fit for them and I am thankful we have the flexibility to do it. Meanwhile I am blog, run the Etsy shop, and manage Tag & Tibby's social media.

Last week the laundry piles grew, dinner was leftovers (again), and I felt overwhelmed. We have a child with high-functioning autism. I don't share about it often on the blog to protect the privacy of our family, but I am frequently emotionally drained by the end of the day. I try to balance work with playing board games, reading early reader books, and homework.

I spent some time mulling over these things this weekend. Here are a few things that helped me.

Stop comparing.

Everyone has a different life journey. Some of us work, some of us stay home. Some of us have clean homes and some of our homes have toys strewn across the floor. Lets get along and stop comparing!

Priorities.

I spent some time by Como Lake this weekend and I was reminded of how important it is to trust God and prioritize times of solitude.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Plan.

Because of my work from home schedule I have decided to spend more time catching up on housework on the weekends. I spent a good bit of time last weekend doing laundry, meal planning, and grocery shopping and I feel much more prepared for the upcoming week.

Cut back.

Blog posts, instagram, new Etsy listings. They can wait when life calls for it. That is the beauty of working for myself and for this stage of life I am thankful for the flexible schedule.

Enjoy.

It is easy to focus on work and life and forget to put on makeup and fix my hair (I always feel so much better when I do). Having coffee with a friend is one of my favorite things. And watching a show or movie with my husband after the kids are in bed. Walking around the local conservatory to get a bit of fresh air. Show grace to yourself when life feels chaotic.

Does anyone else work through these things? Women are such multi-taskers. It is a gift but can also be overwhelming when we don't reign it in. Would love to hear what works for you when life is busy!
