I'm ready to share our global-inspired breakfast nook update with you! Its been a few months coming, and while the space in some ways has stayed the same (we kept our original table and chairs) I love the personality it now has. It feels more us. The walls were scratched and discolored, and our door trim was yellowed. While our previous pendant light was "cute," our new pendant is classy and blends well with the door knobs, shelving, and ceiling fan in the living room. As always I worked off a small budget. Repurposing several things, and adding in pieces that look more expensive than they really cost.Read More
Hey there! Its been a few weeks since my last article! Behind the scenes we are making plans for our kitchen & I'm almost finished designing our eat-in kitchen. Meanwhile I am planning a makeover in our two kids' bedrooms! They each have their own room, but we haven't decorated their spaces and made the rooms as functional as they could be. Their furniture worked in our previous home but it isn't ideal for their current room layouts.
At 8 & 10 our two kids fall into the "Tween" category (crazy!). And the first thing on my list is: new beds. The beds in their rooms don't fit the scale of the space, and defining that first will help me know what accent furniture they need.Read More
Happy New Year!! I'm finally writing my first blog article of the new year. Behind the scenes I have been listing and prioritizing what home projects I want to accomplish in 2018. I have a long list!! But first I want to FINISH the kitchen nook update I began in in November.
Goals for the eat-in kitchen:
- Paint the walls white (already have the paint, just need to DO it!)
- Change/update the curtains to something more modern.
- Purchase a dining table...I love our current table. We purchased it off Craigslist years ago. It is vintage and we have a lot of family memories around it! But it seats 4 and when family visits we need 6 seats. And a rectangle shaped table would be better for back door clearance.
- Change the pendant light. The current fixture is an IKEA hack and I'd classify it as: CUTE! There isn't anything wrong with cute. But it isn't what I envision for the space anymore. A warm toned metal or woven-style pendant would accent our ceiling fan in the living room and warm up the space.
To help me narrow down my light fixture choices I am sharing 8 of my favorite modern pendant lights with a touch of rustic & vintage.Read More
This article has been a labor of love, y'all. I started by illustrating our kitchen. I spent hours researching prices of tile and how to measure backsplashes & countertops. I needed to map out our kitchen options. For $500 we can update our space temporarily, for $1,000 more we can seriously change the look at the space. For $6,000 we can outsource a few things like professionally painted cabinetry and installed solid surface countertops.
The real trick to remodeling a kitchen on a budget is knowing where to spend and where to save.Read More
