Time is a precious commodity. That is why I LOVE quick and easy DIY projects (and recipes). They have the same impact as a lengthy DIY project at a fraction of the time!
At my last visit to Hobby Lobby (fave craft store) I spotted paper mache letters. I instantly thought of our breakfast nook and the word "exit" going out to our back porch. I thought it might match our new pendant lamp. And I am so happy with the result!

Paper Mache Letters (purchased at Hobby Lobby, $2.99 each)
Gold Spray Paint
Lightly spray letters with paint on flat surface in well-ventilated area. After a few minutes stand letters up and spray, turning every few minutes to coat each side. The paper mache will absorb some of the paint, so a second coat may be necessary. After drying attach to wall with wall adhesive strips.
This would be the perfect project for an apartment or rental house. And you could spell out just about anything! I have a long way to go before I feel the kitchen nook will be complete (curtains, paint, a rug, ect) but adding bits of personality to the room does so much for the space!
And what I love the most: this project cost under $15 to create. Happy Making!!
