This salt dough recipe is family friendly and uses basic, non-toxic household ingredients. I would recommend making salt dough ornaments as a classroom project for preschoolers (with adult help) or with elementary age kids. And the Christmas ornaments air dry so no oven is necessary!
This was my second time making salt dough ornaments at home. I originally made a set 4 years ago with my kids, and the ornaments are still a part of our family! Just be sure to wrap them with tissue when packing them away after the season as they can be a little delicate.
For the ingredients you will need all-purpose flour, salt, warm water, and a little oil. For supplies you will need a mixing bowl, rolling pin, cookie cutters, a straw (to make the ornament hole), parchment paper, a strong flat surface, suede lace or string, and stamps or markers for decorating the ornaments.
Without using an oven the drying process will take 3-4 days depending on humidity. Plan to flip ornaments every 24 hours until dry.
